Answer Engine Optimization: Get Cited by ChatGPT

Search behavior split in two over the last two years. Half of it still happens on a results page you can rank on. The other half happens inside ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, where there is no results page, only one answer, and one or two sources cited underneath it.

Ranking for the first kind of search and getting cited for the second kind reward mostly the same fundamentals: clear structure, direct answers near the top of the page, and content that actually resolves the question instead of circling it for three hundred words before the answer shows up. What changes is the tolerance for padding. An AI assistant summarizing your page skips the padding entirely, so a page written to satisfy an old word-count habit just gets quietly ignored in the summary.

The practical shift: write the direct answer in the first two sentences of a section, use real questions as headings instead of clever ones, and keep a genuine FAQ block with schema markup on commercial pages. Structured data does not guarantee a citation, but pages that lack it are much easier for a model to misread or skip.

None of this replaces conventional SEO, and a site with weak technical foundations will not get cited just because it added an FAQ block. It is a layer on top of the same site structure, service page depth, and content strategy that was already the job. We treat it as one more thing the growth layer now has to account for, not a separate discipline.
